Description

Psychedelic-Informed Care is a six-part workshop series designed specifically for California LMFTs who are increasingly asked to support clients curious about psychedelics, preparing to seek experiences elsewhere, or returning from psychedelic experiences. This is not a “how-to” or facilitation training. Instead, it provides practical, scope-appropriate tools for education, harm reduction, and clinical integration—with clear attention to current research signals and legal status; applicability across behavioral, trauma, psychological, and spiritual dimensions; multicultural considerations (including cultural context, appropriation, and exotization); and concrete risk, boundary, and ethical safeguards (e.g., spiritual bypassing, psychedelic exceptionalism, consent and power dynamics).

While each event stands alone and you must register for each separately, they are meant to be a "package" and build upon each other so, please register for all if you can!

Part III will specifically focus on learning how to discuss psychedelics with clients—providing education, harm reduction, and integration support—while staying within legal, ethical, and professional boundaries.

Educational Goals/Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

Demonstrate a structured, scope-appropriate clinical conversation about psychedelics (discussion → education → harm reduction → integration).
Distinguish neutral education from encouragement and clear professional boundaries in client-facing language.
Develop responses to common client requests (e.g., “Should I do it?” “Will you sit with me?”) that preserve alliance and ethical compliance.

Presenter

Dr. Sergio Rodriguez-Castillo (he/him) has over 20 years of experience in sacred medicine and a background spanning law, psychotherapy, and psychedelic-assisted therapy. Holding a Mexican JD and UK LLM, he practiced law for 12 years before shifting to psycho-spiritual studies in India (Sadhana Institute, Osho’s ashram, Ramakrishna Mission). He apprenticed for over a decade with a Mazatec curandera and leads groups in exploring Mexico’s sacred mushroom tradition. He holds master’s degrees in Integral Counseling and East-West Psychology and a Ph.D. focused on the training of psychedelic-assisted therapy. A licensed MFT, he has served as core faculty at CIIS, AMPYDET, and Protocol Q, mentored in CIIS’ PAT program, and is a MAPS MDMA-Assisted Therapy Practitioner and is a lead facilitator at Beckley Retreats. He teaches, mentors, and develops psychedelic therapy curricula. Specializing in personal, interpersonal and transpersonal transformation, existential growth, consciousness expansion, or simply put, helping people rediscover who they really are.

This is an introductory, intermediate, and advanced level course. This program will benefit LMFT, LPCC, LEP and LCSW licensees and pre-licensees. Open to all mental health professionals, both members and non-members.

This course meets the qualifications for 2 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. The Sacramento Valley Chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (SVC-CAMFT), provider #62279, is approved by CAMFT to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. SVC-CAMFT maintains the responsibility for the program and all its content.

CE credit will be awarded via email after the completion of the course in exchange for a course evaluation. No CE credits will be awarded to persons not attending the presentation in it's entirety. Partial CE credit will not be awarded.

Each meeting will include space to discuss clinical questions, explore professional identity, navigate supervision and workplace dynamics, and manage the emotional toll of the work. Participants will also have the opportunity to connect with peers, exchange resources, and cultivate a sense of belonging within the mental health community.

Learn from CAMFT's expert attorneys in a Law and Ethics webinar series to support your practice.

Children are cute, but the issues you often face in their treatment can be complex. In this three-hour CE course, CAMFT attorney Kristin Roscoe will use the story of 13-year-old “Jack” to guide attendees through common legal and ethical issues a therapist might reasonably encounter when working with a child. From consent to treatment, mandated reporting, writing letters, to court involvement, attendees will learn how to spot areas of liability and best proceed to support the treatment of minors.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

!Identify who may consent to the treatment of a minor and understand the particulars of a minor being able to consent to their own treatment.
Distinguish when some common mandated reporting scenarios may be permissive rather than mandatory.
Understand the legal and ethical risks associated with writing letters, particularly when there is court involvement.
Understand the psychotherapist-patient privilege and how best to support minor patients during custody or guardianship legal proceedings.

Presenter

Kristin Roscoe, Esq., CAMFT Staff Attorney takes CAMFT member phone calls regarding law and ethics issues and contributes articles on those subjects to CAMFT's publication, the Therapist. Prior to joining CAMFT’s legal team in 2019, Kristin represented healthcare professionals and hospitals in medical malpractice litigation at La Follette, Johnson, DeHaas, Fesler & Ames. Since entering the legal profession, Kristin has worked in various capacities presenting to and advocating on behalf of her clients both in and outside of the courtroom. Kristin received her B.A. from The College of Wooster in 2006 and graduated from The American University Washington College of Law with her J.D. in 2012.

This workshop presents Radical Compassion, a therapeutic approach that combines empathy and directness to promote authentic healing. Grounded in Humanistic, Existential, Relational–Cultural, and Emotion-Focused theories, it teaches clinicians to use empathy as both support and challenge to address avoidance, resistance, and self-sabotage. Drawing from research on empathic attunement (Greenberg, 2011), congruence (Rogers, 1961), and relational honesty (Yalom, 1989), the model provides evidence-informed strategies to strengthen the therapeutic alliance, enhance authenticity, and foster lasting client growth.

Educational Goals/Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

Identify how integrating empathy and directness within the therapeutic relationship strengthens trust, accountability, and client growth.
Demonstrate strategies for delivering honest, challenging feedback in a clinically sound and compassionate manner.
Apply the Radical Compassion framework to recognize when comfort reinforces avoidance and when confrontation supports transformation.

Sahebjit “TJ” Singh, LMFT is the founder of Support Spirit Counseling & Therapy Practice in Sacramento, California. With over a decade of experience across trauma recovery, forensic treatment, and crisis intervention, TJ practices what they call Radical Compassion, which means facing truth with empathy and guiding growth through discomfort. TJ blends psychodynamic, narrative, strength-based, cognitive-behavioral, and existential approaches rooted in depth psychology and shadow work to help people transform pain into purpose through emotional honesty, self-awareness, and lasting resilience.

Each of these topics is unique and requires a clear and thorough understanding of the legal and ethical implications involved. This webinar will be informative in a way that helps participants formulate legally and ethically sound courses of action in dealing with each of these areas in their practice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Interpret the CAMFT ethical standards relevant to gift giving and receiving.
Asses when it is appropriate and/or inappropriate to either give and/or receive a gift during the therapeutic relationship.
Identify the updated BBS advertising regulations.
Apply advertising standards in alignment with all legal and ethical requirements.

Presenter

Alain Montgomery, Esq. is a member of the State Bar of California. Alain received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley and a Juris Doctor degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Prior to joining the CAMFT legal department, Alain worked in public interest law as a legal advisor for the Superior Court of California where he helped self-represented parties navigate the complexities of small claims litigation. As a member of the CAMFT legal department, Alain has served as part of the support staff for the CAMFT Ethics Committee and has represented the Association at various state regulatory board meetings. After graduating from college and before attending law school, Alain worked as a ski instructor at Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort.

This law and ethics-focused training is designed for mental health professionals who are paneled with insurance companies, considering becoming in-network, or seeing clients who wish to use out-of-network benefits. While insurance provides increased access to care, it also introduces complex legal and ethical obligations. During the training, Ms. Jasper will discuss how to fully inform patients about insurance issues at the outset of treatment, bill accurately and respond to records requests and audits in a manner that complies with state and federal confidentiality laws.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Identify essential insurance-related disclosures that must be included in the informed consent process at the outset of treatment.
Implement informed consent procedures that fully notify patients about insurance issues and financial responsibilities at the start of treatment.
Execute accurate billing practices to ensure compliance with insurance company requirements and professional standards.
Identify common reasons for insurance record requests and audits.
Respond to records requests and insurance audits effectively while maintaining adherence to state and federal confidentiality laws, such as HIPAA.

Presenter

Sara Jasper, Esq., CAMFT Staff Attorney grew up in the Sacramento area. She graduated magna cum laude from California State University, Chico with a B.A. in Journalism. While attending CSUC, Sara Interned for Scripps Howard News Service in Washington, D.C. and served as an editor for the award-winning weekly student newspaper, The Orion. Sara attended The University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law where she served as a library research assistant to professors on campus. During law school, she also clerked for the California Judicial Council, Center for Children, Families & the Courts and for the National Center for Youth Law. Until she moved to San Diego last fall, Sara was on the Board of Directors for Sacramento Court Appointed Special Advocates (C.A.S.A.) and is a member of the State Bar of California. Prior to joining CAMFT, Sara worked at the private firm of Middleton, Young & Minney, LLP where she specialized in education and employment law. Sara also worked as the Legal Liaison and Administrative Officer in the Office of the Chief of Police for the City of Sacramento for three years. She assumed her role with the City of Sacramento's Police Department upon graduating from law school.
